Jeep Wrangler JK vs JL: Parts That Do Not Cross Over at Musaffah, Abu Dhabi

Published

A customer arrives at M-40 with a Wrangler part number they looked up on the service schedule. The part number is correct for a JK; the vehicle at home is a JL. The trip ends at the counter without the part. This is the most common Jeep fitment mistake we see at Musaffah, and avoiding it takes one step: confirm the generation before you order.

The 2018 Dividing Line: JK Platform Out, JL Platform In

JK ran as the standard Wrangler from 2007 through 2018. The JL replaced it from 2018 onwards. The problem with using 2018 as a boundary year is that both generations were in production during that model year: the JK ran through to the final 2018 units and the JL entered on the same timeline. The year alone tells you nothing about which platform you are working with. The 17-digit VIN is what tells us which generation the vehicle actually is, and we run it against the Mopar fitment reference before confirming anything.

Suspension and Drivetrain: Near-Zero Crossover Between the Two Generations

Wrangler JL (2018 onwards) and JK (2007 to 2018) share the name and almost nothing else in the suspension and drivetrain. Suspension links, track bars, differential covers, and axle shafts are generation-specific; there is very little that crosses over. The two architectures are fundamentally different. For the JL, the Musaffah shelf holds front and rear brake pads and rotors, upper and lower front control arm assemblies, the track bar, sway bar links, and front Dana 44 axle seals. Rubicon trim adds front locking differential components to that list. JK suspension hardware sits in a separate set from the JL lines.

Brake Part Numbers: JK and JL Run Separate Specifications

Brake hardware is the clearest example of non-interchangeability between the two generations. The numbers below come from the Mopar fitment reference reviewed at this counter in September 2026. They are a starting-point identification; the 17-digit VIN is the final confirmation before anything is set aside.

  • 68409860AC: Front brake pad kit, Wrangler JL all trims standard front brakes, 2018-2026
  • 68385238AC: Rear brake pad kit, Wrangler JL all trims standard rear brakes, 2018-2025
  • 68273502AB: Front brake rotor (L/R), Wrangler JL standard front brakes, 2018-2026
  • 68273464AB: Front brake rotor, Wrangler JL (confirm trim and brake package via VIN), 2018-2026
  • 52060147AA: Front brake rotor, Wrangler JK, Liberty, Patriot, Wagoneer, Grand Cherokee variants, 2007-2018

The JK rotor (52060147AA) does not fit the JL. The JL rotor numbers do not fit the JK. WhatsApp the part request with the 17-digit VIN and state the generation if you already know it; we confirm the correct number from the shelf before you travel to M-40.

Engine and Cabin Filters: Separate Numbers Despite the Shared 3.6L V6

Both generations run the 3.6L V6 Pentastar in common trim levels, but the airbox geometry changed between the JK and JL. The JK engine air filter (Mopar 68257791AB, 3.6L V6, 2007 to 2018) does not fit the JL. The JL uses 68257030AA, which covers the JL and Gladiator from 2018 onwards. The same split applies to cabin air filters: 68535613AA covers the JK (2-door and 4-door, 2011 to 2018), and 68535621AA applies to the JL (2018 to 2022).

One engine oil filter, Mopar 4884899AC, covers both Wrangler JK and Grand Cherokee among a broader application set for 5.7L HEMI applications from 2008 onwards. Even where a number spans generations, we run the VIN against the shelf record before confirming the fit.

Jeep Grand Cherokee: Same Counter, Different Platform

Grand Cherokee comes to the M-40 counter regularly and it sits on its own platform, separate from both the JK and JL. WK2 Grand Cherokee brake hardware uses its own part numbers: Mopar 68144427AB for front pads (WK2 non-SRT trims, 2012 to 2015, confirm via VIN), 68144432AB for rear pads (2012 to 2017), and 4755569AA for the front rotor (BR6/BR1 brake systems; not for SRT8 or Trackhawk). The SRT8 and Trackhawk run separate brake specifications. State the trim on WhatsApp for any Grand Cherokee brake request.

JK Valve Cover Gaskets: A Paired Job

Workshops replacing valve cover gaskets on the JK typically do both sides in the same job. Mopar 4893805AB covers the left side (JK through 2018) and 4893804AB the right. These are JK-specific items; the JL engine compartment layout is different. If the request is for one side, we note that most workshops take both at once; stock confirmation covers both numbers.

What to Send Before You Drive to M-40

WhatsApp the 17-digit VIN along with the part you need. If you already know the generation, state JK or JL. If you know the Mopar part number from the service manual, include it. We match the VIN against the Mopar fitment reference, confirm what is on the shelf, and come back before you make the trip. For Rubicon-trim requests involving front locking differential components, or for any Grand Cherokee SRT or Trackhawk application, include the trim level in the message.

Parts confirmed in shelf stock at Musaffah before midday ship within Abu Dhabi the same day. Deliveries to Dubai, Sharjah, and other emirates go out next working day from M-40. The counter runs Monday to Saturday, 08:30 to 19:30. Walk-in customers can check availability and generation fitment directly at Motronix Shop, Musaffah Industrial Area M-40, Abu Dhabi.

The full Mopar parts reference for Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Dodge, RAM, and Chrysler is on the Mopar brand page.
